Devon Stave Basket (Size 7)

The Devon Stave Baskets are handcrafted in Devon using traditional materials and time-honoured techniques. After years of research, John has recreated the complete family of Devon stave basket forms based on the original set once owned by the last dedicated maker, Jack Rowsell of Tiverton, who died in 1997.

Made from ash and elm, each basket reflects an understanding of the qualities these native timbers bring to its construction. As both species face significant threats from tree disease, John’s work also preserves a material knowledge that is increasingly at risk of being lost. Living and working in Devon’s Teign Valley, he continues to make around 50 baskets each year, sustaining both the craft and the traditional woodland management practices that have shaped the landscape for generations.
