Alex Walshaw creates furniture and functional objects from storm fallen and reclaimed wood, and wood grown through coppicing, an ancient and sustainable method of woodland management. Walshaw combines fresh green wood and relic oak in his furniture designs, forming hybrids of the modern and ancient.
Alex shapes wood with simple hand tools which have long been used for carving, such as axes, knives and adze’s. He leaves traces of his woodworking practice on his works, enjoying the addition of his stories to those already present in the wood. His practice is totally embedded within nature and his natural surroundings are the source of his materials, his inspiration, and also act as his workplace, throughout every season.
