The Canopy Armchair by The Marchmont Workshop takes its inspiration from the woodlands surrounding their workshop on the Marchmont House estate in the Scottish Borders, where ash dieback has had a visible impact in recent years. Made from green wood, the chair blends traditional techniques, handed down through six generations of master to apprentice with a contemporary design approach.
Its turned rear legs extend into hand-carved, winding branches that echo the form of the ash tree, culminating in a sweeping split crest. This distinctive feature references canopy shyness—the phenomenon where the branches and leaves of neighbouring trees grow close but never touch. The crest wraps gently around the sitter, providing support above a hand-woven seat made from common river rush, which the makers harvest each summer.
