The Melissanthi Collection

Maria Sigma

The Melissanthi Collection by textile-artist Maria Sigma, is derived from the Greek words melissa meaning "honeybee" and anthos meaning “flower”. The collection embraces Maria's minimalist and asymmetrical weaves that she explains "deliberately discard the pursuit of perfect symmetry and eschew "self-punishing techniques that leave no room for creative exploration." Her work embodies a feeling of home, a sense of place and identity and reflects daily rituals, becoming part of personal collections and timeless heirlooms.

PROCESS

A zero-waste and slow making approach is at the heart of her practice; she aspires for minimum yarn waste and unnecessary cuts and the yarn she uses is as close to its raw state as it can be, hugely reducing the water and energy use their production.

'Sustainability, environment-friendly artefacts and a harmonic human-product-environment relationship are quintessential aspects of my work ethic and artistic philosophy.' - Maria Sigma
