Shelter Reclaimed

The Pitch Pine used for making this Orkney Chair Frame, came from a roof beam that was once part of the roof structure for what was the wood yard in Orkney. A building once used to provide shelter for the timber stored within it, has now been transformed into a chair that was designed to shelter the sitter from the harsh, Orkney, winter weather. Great care has been taken to handcraft the chair frame from the beam and the only scar of it's previous life, is a stain on the seat where the straw meets the chair base. This is where a rusted nail once sat nestled in the beam causing the stain.  The Oat straw that has been used to make the chair back was hand sewn, hand cut, hand gathered, hand tied and hand cleaned before finally being handstitched onto the chair frame.

Born from the bones of a building that stood for decades, this chair honours the Orkney Islands legacy of resourcefulness and offering a second life to something that may have otherwise become waste. The timber used has probably been around for more than one hundred years, and through new life, will be around for at least another one hundred years in the form of this Orkney Chair.
