Sugar Cone Light in Matt White by ceramicist Rich Miller is part of The New Craftsmen’s ‘Claylarks’ collection. Rich has made this pendant light in response to the 18th century sugar industry and looks to his own cultural ancestry. Having found a sherd of a sugar cone while mudlarking on the foreshore of the River Thames, Rich became fully immersed in learning the history of these objects and the transatlantic triangular trade. The sugar industry created enormous wealth for Europe but at the expense of the exploitation of the workers, who were enslaved. At that time, sugar was sold in solid form, in cones made from pottery moulds. Rich has created forms which reflect the shape of these forms, in a colour palette referencing the innumerable sherds of pottery he found on the foreshore.
This light comes as standard with a suspension hook and 3m chain with brown twisted fabric cable and E27 bulb holder. International wiring available, please enquire.
