Introducing the BABU Chair and HADITHI Floor Lamp by SASA Works, as part of our ‘Plant Explorations’ collection.

SASA Works is a collaboration between architect, artist and maker, Craig Bamford and artist, Isik Sayarer. Craig brings a holistic approach to architecture, furniture and objects and Isik creates work that fuses art and craft with a deep sacred relationship to ecology. Together, they seek to create a poetic and refined relationship between materials and space with a blend of traditional and contemporary techniques.

The design of the BABU Chair was informed by irregularity found in nature. SASA Works observed the way branches grew from trees and hoped to create a piece in reflection.

“We wanted to create a piece that alludes to the idea of being 'grown' and not simply made. The BABU Chair carries the essence of a guardian of the forest and celebrates the grace and holding of wood as a material.”

They hoped to create a piece of joinery that was precise yet sculptural, and carved yet comfortable. Working with the living form of the wood allowed for a wildness to be present in the final form, retaining much of the original character of the tree. Much of the chair was made using hand tools, in order to reduce the impact, with an end result that is a pleasure to rest in.

For the HADITHI Floor Lamp, SASA Works looked to spring time flowers and the enchanted realms of woodlands which often symbolise purity, grace and healing. Continuing their consideration of natural forms, the light is made from formed fabric dipped in ethically sourced beeswax, echoing the elegant shape of pendant flowers. They used steel to reflect the delicate veins of the flower. When illuminated, the light produces a delicate glow with a dappled shadow and has a warming smell of beeswax, creating a beguiling atmosphere.
